How To Determine the Proper Root Ball Size
Understanding how to determine root ball size is necessary to safely transplant a tree. Measure 18 inches up from the ground on the trunk. Then lay your measuring tool across the face of the trunk and measure the diameter of the tree at this point. Multiply the diameter by 10 and you will arrive at the number of inches needed for your root ball. For example, a tree with a 9” diameter would need a 90” root ball.
